War monitor: Israel hits Hezbollah arms depot in Syria

Early Sunday in Syria, Israeli airstrikes targeted multiple locations in Damascus province, including a weapons depot. These strikes are part of a series of actions Israel has undertaken against targets in Syria since the outbreak of the civil war in 2011, predominantly aiming at Iran-supported groups and Syrian military installations.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the Israeli missiles hit a Syrian military-owned weapons storage utilized by Hezbollah in the Qalamun mountains of Damascus province, alongside another military site in the vicinity, causing a fire.

Syria’s state news agency, SANA, confirmed an Israeli aerial assault on various sites in the southern region, resulting in a wounded soldier and material damages. The report also mentioned that Syrian air defenses intercepted some of the missiles.

This incident follows a recent pattern of intensified Israeli airstrikes in Syria, aligning with the ongoing conflict with Hamas, an ally of Hezbollah, which began on October 7. Earlier this month, an Israeli strike in Banias on Syria’s Mediterranean coast reportedly killed an Iranian Revolutionary Guard and two others, marking the third consecutive day of Israeli operations in Syria.

Over the past five months, the Israeli military disclosed it targeted approximately 4,500 positions associated with Hezbollah in Lebanon and Syria. Israel maintains its stance of preventing Iran from solidifying its foothold in Syria, though it seldom acknowledges individual strikes.
