Former President Donald Trump was seen with blood on the side of his face after shots were fired during a political rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday afternoon.
The sound of gunfire was heard as Trump appeared to touch his ear before quickly dropping to the ground, surrounded by Secret Service agents. Once he stood up, he raised his fist and urged the crowd to “fight” before being swiftly escorted off stage by the Secret Service.
Trump confirmed he had been shot in a statement posted about two hours after the incident.
“I want to thank the United States Secret Service and all of Law Enforcement for their rapid response to the shooting that took place in Butler, Pennsylvania,” Trump said on social media. “Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person who was badly injured. It is incredible that such an act can take place in our country.”
“Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead,” he continued. “I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong when I heard a whizzing sound, felt the bullet rip through my skin, and saw much bleeding. I realized then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!”
The Trump campaign also released a statement: “President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act.”
“He is fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility,” the statement added. “More details will follow.”
Support for Trump poured in on social media from across the political spectrum, including from many Democrats.
