Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri expressed optimism after his second meeting with U.S. mediator Amos Hochstein on Wednesday, stating that Lebanon has done its part to ensure the agreement’s success.
In an interview with al-Liwaa newspaper, Berri explained that Hochstein’s extended stay in Beirut was due to ongoing efforts over the past two weeks, culminating in detailed discussions over the last two days covering all 13 articles of the agreement.
Berri clarified that there will be no changes to Resolution 1701, and its implementation mechanisms will remain unchanged.
Berri emphasized that the situation is at a critical juncture: either Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accepts the agreement, leading to an end to the conflict, or he rejects it, resulting in more severe consequences.
When asked about Hochstein’s coordination with Tel Aviv during his time in Lebanon, Berri noted that while there is an ambassador in Israel, resolving such a sensitive issue cannot be done over the phone. Hochstein has since arrived in Tel Aviv, and the situation should become clearer based on Israel’s response to the proposal.
