Following two meetings with Speaker Nabih Berri and an evening of intensive talks at the U.S. embassy involving Berri’s aide Ali Hamdan and members of the U.S. delegation, U.S. mediator Amos Hochstein announced that the agreements reached should be acceptable to Israel, according to Al-Akhbar newspaper.
The nightly discussions were reportedly accompanied by phone consultations between Israeli officials and members of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s team, the newspaper cited informed sources as saying.
Israeli state media quoted senior officials indicating that an agreement with Lebanon could be finalized next week if the issues regarding Israeli “freedom of action” and the monitoring committee are resolved.
Additionally, Israeli reports suggested that 90% of the clauses have been agreed upon. Sources quoted by the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth mentioned that Jordan, Egypt, and the UAE will assist in bolstering the capabilities of the Lebanese Army.
