The release of “The Batman 2,” directed by Matt Reeves, has been postponed to October 2, 2026, moving from its original date of October 3, 2025. This delay is attributed to the recent strikes in Hollywood, which disrupted the film and television industry’s production schedules across the globe.
This adjustment in the release schedule allows “Superman,” directed by James Gunn, to premiere without competition on July 11, 2025. This film marks Gunn’s first venture with the revamped DC Studios, led by Gunn and Peter Safran, under the “Gods and Monsters” phase.
It’s important to note that Matt Reeves’ Batman does not exist within James Gunn’s envisioned DC Universe. Gunn is also developing another Batman project titled “Batman: Brave and the Bold,” directed by Andy Muschietti, indicating a new actor will don the Batman cape, differing from Robert Pattinson’s portrayal in Reeves’ narrative.
“The Batman,” which debuted two years prior, was a commercial success, earning over $772 million worldwide and achieving significant viewership on Warner Bros Discovery’s streaming service, Max.
The sequel to Reeves’ “The Batman” was officially announced in April 2022 at CinemaCon, with Mattson Tomlin later joining Reeves as a co-writer. In early 2023, DC Studios leaders James Gunn and Peter Safran announced the sequel’s title and its initial release date.
