Jones aims for Ohtani-like talent to boost Japan in rugby rankings

Eddie Jones, returning as the head coach of Japan’s rugby union team, has set his sights on elevating the team into the world’s top four. After a brief and challenging period coaching Australia and a significant tenure with England that saw them reach the World Cup final in 2019, Jones is ready for his second stint with Japan. Under his leadership previously, Japan had achieved notable successes, and now ranked 12th, they are preparing to face the fifth-ranked England in Tokyo on June 22, in what will be Jones’s first match back at the helm.

Jones has expressed his ambition to develop a bold and innovative style of play that aligns with Japanese strengths, focusing on an attacking approach. He aims to inspire young athletes to reach for greatness, hoping to discover rugby’s version of Shohei Ohtani, the Japanese baseball sensation who has made a significant impact in Major League Baseball.

Despite the setbacks during his time with Australia, including an early exit from the 2023 World Cup, Jones believes he has contributed positively, leaving behind a youthful and promising squad. He emphasizes his effort to improve the team during his tenure and accepts responsibility for the outcomes, underscoring a no-regrets attitude towards his coaching career.
