T20 World Cup 2024: Pakistan’s Ahmed Shehzad blames PCB chairman’s two mistakes for disastrous tournament

Pakistan batter Ahmed Shehzad has attributed the team’s poor performance at the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 to two key decisions made by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi. His comments followed Pakistan’s elimination from the tournament after the Ireland vs USA match was abandoned due to rain.

“Since Mohsin Naqvi became PCB chairman, he has made two major mistakes. First, by reinstating Babar as captain, and second, by appointing Wahab Riaz as chief selector. His decision-making and management have been highly unprofessional. This has allowed a group of 7-8 players who engage in groupism to remain unchecked. If these players are not dealt with, it will be unfair to those who might get dismissed,” Shehzad said during an interview with Geo News.

Shehzad also took aim at senior players, including captain Babar Azam, for their subpar performances. Pakistan lost matches to India and the USA while securing a win against Canada. After two losses, they needed a victory in their final league game against Ireland and hoped for a USA loss to Ireland to advance.

However, the washout of the Ireland vs USA match meant the USA finished with five points, while Pakistan could only achieve a maximum of four points, leading to their exit from the tournament.

Against Canada, we needed a big win to improve our net run rate, but Rizwan scored the slowest fifty, and Babar also played a sluggish innings. Personal milestones have ruined Pakistan cricket. There’s talk of leadership, but none exists—just social media posturing. You’ve had 4-5 years to improve but failed to deliver any significant wins.

“Your fitness levels are not up to standard, and there is evident politicking within the team. Your cricket is declining instead of peaking,” Shehzad added.
