Spain midfielder Pedri is set to miss the remainder of Euro 2024 due to a knee ligament sprain sustained during Friday’s quarter-final win against Germany.
The Barcelona star had to be substituted just eight minutes into the match in Stuttgart, which Spain won 2-1 after extra time.
On Saturday, the Spanish football federation confirmed that the 21-year-old had suffered a “grade two ligament sprain.” Despite his injury, Pedri will stay in Germany to support his teammates for the rest of the tournament.
Spanish media reports indicate that Pedri will be out of action for about a month.
The injury occurred following a tough challenge from Toni Kroos, in what turned out to be the final match of the German midfielder’s career.
Kroos, a former Real Madrid player, extended his best wishes to Pedri in an emotional letter to German fans on Saturday.
“Get well soon, Pedri. It was never my intention to cause any harm,” Kroos posted on Instagram. “Wishing you a speedy recovery and all the best. You are a fantastic player.”
Spain is set to face France in the semi-finals in Munich on Tuesday.
Dani Olmo is expected to take Pedri’s place in Luis de la Fuente’s starting line-up, following his performance against Germany where he scored the opening goal and assisted Mikel Merino’s decisive late winner.
