Putintseva Ends Swiatek’s Wimbledon Run, Advances to Fourth Round

Russian-born Kazakhstani Yulia Putintseva ended Iga Swiatek’s Wimbledon aspirations with a stunning victory over the World No. 1, in one of the most significant upsets in the tournament’s history on Saturday, July 6. The match on Court No. 1 saw Swiatek defeated 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, as Putintseva showcased her dominance. This loss means Swiatek will have to wait until at least 2025 to contend for the prestigious Wimbledon title.

Swiatek, who had been on an impressive 21-match winning streak, was the clear favorite against Putintseva, who is ranked 35th in the WTA standings. Swiatek started strong, winning the first set 3-6. However, the momentum shifted dramatically in the second and third sets, where Putintseva overpowered her, allowing Swiatek to win only three games. Putintseva’s strong forehand and effective use of breakpoints secured her spot in the next round.

This unexpected defeat means that both the World No. 1 and the defending champion are out of Wimbledon in the first week. Defending champion Markéta Vondroušová was also knocked out in the opening round by Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.

Swiatek’s defeat prolongs her quest to win the Wimbledon Championships. Her best performance at Wimbledon was reaching the quarterfinals last year. Grass courts remain the only surface where she has yet to claim a Grand Slam title. In her stellar career, Swiatek has won four French Open titles and the 2022 US Open. She has yet to win the Australian Open, with her best result being a semifinal appearance in 2022.
