On Saturday, April 20, the US House of Representatives passed significant legislation, approving a $60.8 billion military aid package for Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia. This move comes as Ukraine faces a severe ammunition shortage crucial for its defense efforts. Additionally, the House sanctioned a $26.4 billion support package for Israel as it continues its military actions against Hamas in Gaza.
In response, the Kremlin criticized the decision, predicting that it would only lead to more Ukrainian casualties, enrich the United States, and exacerbate Ukraine’s plight, according to Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his gratitude for the U.S. aid, highlighting its potential to prevent the war from spreading further and to save countless lives, thereby strengthening both nations involved.
The European Union’s response was also positive, with EU chief Charles Michel recognizing the aid as a robust statement of support for Ukraine, reinforcing the commitment of those who uphold freedom and the UN charter.
Meanwhile, Israel’s foreign minister welcomed the approval of the military aid, viewing it as a strong signal to adversaries and a testament to the robust alliance and strategic partnership between Israel and the U.S.
Germany also responded positively, with Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock calling it a hopeful day for Ukraine and European security, celebrating the unified stance of the USA and Europe against Putin’s actions.
President Joe Biden praised the bipartisan effort in the House, noting the critical support the package will provide not only to Ukraine and Israel but also in delivering humanitarian aid to various global regions and enhancing security in the Indo-Pacific. Biden stressed the importance of this legislative action at a pivotal moment in history.
