Joker Director Todd Phillips Hints He May Skip Another Sequel

Will there be more Joker sequels? Director Todd Phillips recently shared his thoughts on the future of the Joker franchise as the release of Joker: Folie à Deux approaches.

In an interview with Variety, Todd Phillips expressed that he feels ready to move on from the Joker character after the upcoming release, which stars Joaquin Phoenix as Joker and Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. For Joker: Folie à Deux, Phillips has returned to the director’s chair and also co-wrote the screenplay.

When asked about the possibility of a third film in the series, Phillips seemed uncertain, saying, “It was fun to play in this sort of sandbox for two movies, but I think we’ve said what we wanted to say in this world.”

Originally, Joker was intended to be a standalone film. Before the 2019 movie became a massive hit, Phillips envisioned it as a one-off project. He had even pitched the idea to Warner Bros. executives as a way to “begin a new division called DC Black,” according to an interview with Empire Magazine.

So, will there be a third Joker film? While Phillips isn’t sure about making a third Joker film, there’s still a glimmer of hope for fans. The director had similar doubts before agreeing to make the sequel, which is set to release this year.

Before Joker

Folie à Deux was confirmed, Phillips went back and forth on whether a sequel was necessary. He also mentioned in August 2019 that the decision would heavily depend on Joaquin Phoenix’s interest in reprising his role.

So, a third Joker film might hinge on whether Phoenix is willing to return to the franchise.
