The Israeli political-security cabinet is set to approve a U.S.-backed initiative concerning Lebanon, with the final stages of drafting nearly complete, according to the Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation on Wednesday.
The report states that Israel has alternative plans in place should Lebanon reject the U.S. proposal. It also warns that if weapons transfers to Lebanon persist, there may be repercussions for Bashar Assad’s regime.
The U.S.-brokered arrangement aims to halt weapons transfers from Syria to Lebanon. It includes provisions for Hezbollah to withdraw north of the Litani River and for the Lebanese Army to take its place. The United States has pledged to support Israel in efforts to prevent Hezbollah from rearming.
Additionally, the agreement reportedly grants Israel the freedom to act if any violations occur.
