On Tuesday, the Israeli military executed a targeted strike in south Beirut, according to an IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) statement which did not provide further specifics. Meanwhile, local media reported that the strikes occurred simultaneously at an apartment in a building near al-Zahraa Hospital in Jnah and another location in Beirut’s southern suburbs.
The Lebanese state-run National News Agency confirmed that Israeli forces targeted two locations in south Beirut. The agency described a “violent enemy strike” between Jnah and Ouzai, close to al-Zahraa Hospital, followed shortly by another strike near a roundabout close to the Kuwaiti embassy.
One of the airstrikes damaged a residential building, shattering windows and impacting an apartment located on the southern highway leading to Beirut international airport, roughly 100 meters from the Iranian Embassy.
The IDF claimed responsibility for the death of Mohammed Jaafar Qassir in the afternoon strike. Qassir was reportedly the head of Hezbollah’s Unit 4400, responsible for transporting weapons from Iran to Lebanon and overseeing the development of precision-guided missiles for Hezbollah. Additionally, the Israeli military stated that Qassir had funneled hundreds of millions of dollars to Hezbollah in recent years.
Hezbollah has not yet responded to these allegations.
Qassir’s brother, Ahmad, was known for carrying out a suicide attack in Tyre, a southern Lebanese port city, in 1982 that resulted in the deaths of numerous Israeli soldiers. His death is commemorated annually as “Martyr’s Day.”
