Air traffic at Israel’s Ben Gurion airport was suspended on Tuesday following a series of explosions across the country, triggered by a missile attack from Iran, according to a spokesperson.
The missile assault by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards was reportedly in retaliation for the deaths of Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah and Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, as well as Revolutionary Guards commander Nilforoshan. “We targeted the heart of the occupied territories (Israel) in response to the martyrdom of these leaders,” stated the Guards in a release cited by Fars news agency.
The Guards also issued a stern warning of “crushing attacks” against Israel should there be any retaliation.
Loud explosions were heard in Tel Aviv and near Jerusalem, with the blasts near Jerusalem causing windows to rattle. Residents were instructed to stay indoors and remain near bomb shelters through alerts on mobile phones and announcements on national television. Sirens were reported in various parts of Jerusalem and central Israel.
The Israeli army communicated to the public, “Iran’s attack is ongoing. You are requested to remain in a protected space until further notice. The sounds you are hearing are from interceptions or fallen projectiles.”
In response to the attacks, President Joe Biden directed the U.S. military to support Israel’s defense by intercepting Iranian missiles aimed at Israel. This directive was issued from the White House, where both Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee in the upcoming U.S. presidential election, were monitoring the situation.
