Palestinian medical authorities report that an Israeli airstrike in northern Gaza has killed at least 20 people, most of whom were women and children. According to Hossam Abu Safiya, director of a nearby hospital that treated the casualties, the strike hit a residence in Beit Lahiya where multiple families were taking shelter late on Monday. The Gaza Health Ministry’s emergency services confirmed that among those killed were eight women and six children.
The Israeli military has not yet commented on the incident.
For nearly a month, Israel has been conducting a large-scale operation in northern Gaza, one of the most isolated and devastated areas of the region. Israeli authorities ordered the full evacuation of Beit Lahiya, nearby Beit Hanoun, and the densely populated Jabaliya refugee camp, allowing almost no humanitarian assistance into the area over this period.
As the conflict continues, tens of thousands have fled to Gaza City, joining the growing numbers displaced since hostilities began following the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas-led militants on southern Israel.
