U.S. mediator Amos Hochstein is set to make a surprise visit to Beirut, which appears to be connected to recent discussions about Lebanon that took place at the Elysee Palace, according to key parliamentary sources. This visit follows ongoing efforts by French President Emmanuel Macron to prevent a wide-scale conflict in Lebanon, sources informed Nidaa al-Watan newspaper, with their comments published on Tuesday.
On Monday, Macron had a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, emphasizing his desire to prevent any further deterioration in the Middle East situation, as stated by the French presidency. Additionally, France is pushing for reduced tensions along the Blue Line between Israel and Lebanon.
Diplomatic sources revealed that Hochstein’s anticipated trip aligns with the French-led efforts. He is expected to bring proposals aimed at easing tensions in southern Lebanon, including solutions for outstanding issues in the land border demarcation between Lebanon and Israel.
These sources highlighted the urgency of the recent meetings in Paris, involving Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Army Chief General Joseph Aoun, labeling them as potentially the ‘last chance’ to avert conflict. The French initiative seeks to prevent war through the involvement of UNIFIL and the Lebanese Army. This proactive French move is reportedly based on intelligence suggesting Israel’s intent to undertake significant military actions in the Rafah area and address issues related to Hezbollah’s presence near the border.
