Hezbollah Strikes Base Near Haifa After Another Intense Night

Early on Monday, Hezbollah announced that it had attacked an Israeli military installation near Haifa, marking the third such assault on military positions in that area within a single day. According to a statement from the group, Hezbollah militants fired Fadi 1 rockets at the Carmel base south of Haifa late Sunday. This followed two previous strikes on another military site also located south of Haifa, which the group dedicated to their late leader Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed last month in an Israeli strike on Beirutโ€™s southern suburbs.

In response to ongoing threats, the Israeli military issued a renewed call on Sunday night for civilians to evacuate parts of Beirutโ€™s southern suburbs, a Hezbollah stronghold that has been under intense bombardment since last month. Military spokesman Avichay Adraee delivered the evacuation warning via social media platform X, specifying the areas of Burj al-Barajneh and Hadath as imminent targets due to their proximity to Hezbollah facilities.

Following the evacuation warnings, Beirutโ€™s southern skyline was again illuminated by airstrikes, intensifying after what was already the heaviest bombardment since the escalation of aerial attacks on September 23.

An earlier airstrike on Sunday in the town of Qmatiyeh, southeast of Beirut, resulted in the deaths of six individuals, including three children, according to Lebanonโ€™s Health Ministry.

Over the weekend, more than 30 airstrikes were reported by Lebanonโ€™s state-run National News Agency, while Israeli forces noted that approximately 130 projectiles had been fired from Lebanon into Israeli territory. Residents of Beirut described the overwhelming and terrifying sounds of the conflict, with one labeling it โ€œa night of terror.โ€

In a particularly tragic incident, an airstrike in the coastal village of Jiyyeh killed three sisters and their aunt. A neighbor stressed the civilian nature of the targeted home by pointing out the victims were all women.

The recent surge in violence follows Israelโ€™s initiation of a limited ground operation in southern Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah following the killing of Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah and several senior leaders. This conflict represents the most severe fighting between Israel and Hezbollah since their month-long war in 2006.

The ongoing hostilities have resulted in the deaths of at least 1,400 Lebanese, including civilians and Hezbollah combatants, and have displaced over 1.2 million people. Israel maintains that its objective is to eliminate Hezbollahโ€™s presence near its borders to allow for the safe return of Israeli citizens.
