During his recent trip to Cairo, French Foreign Minister Stephane Sejourne discussed with Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry the ongoing ceasefire negotiations between Hamas and Israel, emphasizing that any truce in Gaza should also include a ceasefire in Lebanon. Sejourne’s visit is part of a regional tour, which also included stops in Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and Israel, aimed at addressing the nearly seven-month-long war in Gaza. Hamas is considering a proposal made in Cairo for a 40-day ceasefire and a prisoner exchange.
Sejourne also informed Shoukry about his discussions in Lebanon, where ongoing hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah have resulted in significant casualties. He relayed the death tolls and underscored the humanitarian impact, particularly on civilians. In Lebanon, Sejourne expressed a strong stance against escalating into a full-scale war, noting the existing violence in southern Lebanon and its heavy toll on civilians.
Additionally, Sejourne briefed Shoukry on amendments France proposed to Lebanon for resolving the border conflict, which he later discussed with Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz in Jerusalem. Sejourne highlighted France’s ongoing concern for its citizens in Lebanon and the severe implications of the 2006 war.
