The first reactions to *Gladiator II* are in, and they’re overwhelmingly positive! Legendary director Ridley Scott returns to the world of ancient Rome, delivering what early viewers are calling a thrilling and epic follow-up to the iconic film he released 24 years ago.
Scheduled to hit theaters on November 15, the much-anticipated sequel had its first screening at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles. A select group of film critics, industry insiders, and media members were invited to preview the movie ahead of its official release.
First Impressions of Gladiator II
Ever since it was announced, *Gladiator II* has been one of the most highly anticipated films, and with Ridley Scott back in the director’s chair, expectations were sky-high. Now, with early reactions pouring in, it appears Scott has successfully delivered a sequel worthy of the original.
The movie is set years after the death of Maximus (originally played by Russell Crowe) and centers on Lucius, the grown-up son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and nephew of Commodus, the villain from the first film (played by Joaquin Phoenix). The official synopsis explains: *“Years after witnessing the death of the revered hero Maximus at the hands of his uncle, Lucius is forced into the Colosseum after his home is seized by tyrannical emperors who now rule Rome. Fueled by rage and with the fate of the Empire hanging in the balance, Lucius must draw strength from his past to restore the glory of Rome for its people.”*
In addition to Paul Mescal playing Lucius, the film boasts a stellar cast, including Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Lior Raz, Derek Jacobi, Connie Nielsen, and Denzel Washington.
Critical Praise
Following the screening, many critics have already dubbed *Gladiator II* an Oscar contender, much like its predecessor. The film has earned praise for its impressive performances, breathtaking visual effects, and intense action sequences.
Matt Brennan from the *Los Angeles Times* described the movie as “absolute sicko shit,” adding that it is “the ‘we are so back’ of bloody costume epics.” TV and film journalist Scott Menzel called it a “big, bloody, and badass action spectacle.”
Clayton Davis from *Variety* highlighted Paul Mescal’s performance as Lucius as one of the film’s most pleasant surprises. He also praised Denzel Washington’s role, suggesting that “a third Oscar could very well be in his future.”
Josh Horowitz, host of *Happy Sad Confused*, summed it up as “pretty f**king great,” echoing the general sentiment surrounding the film.
With such strong early reactions, *Gladiator II* seems set to make a big splash both at the box office and during awards season.
