Disney/Marvel’s superhero comedy “Deadpool & Wolverine” reclaimed the top spot at the North American box office this weekend, earning an estimated $18.3 million, according to industry tracker Exhibitor Relations on Sunday. The film, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, has now led the box office for four of its five weekends, amassing an impressive $577.2 million domestically and $634 million globally.
Last week’s leader, the sci-fi horror film “Alien: Romulus” from 20th Century Studios, slipped to second place, bringing in $16.2 million over the weekend. Directed by Uruguayan filmmaker Fede Alvarez, the movie tells the chilling story of space colonists facing off against a deadly alien. The cast includes Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, and Spike Fearn.
Sony’s romantic drama “It Ends With Us,” based on the popular Colleen Hoover novel, took third place with $11.9 million in ticket sales. Starring and co-produced by Blake Lively, the film has performed surprisingly well, with a global total of $242 million. Analyst David A. Gross highlighted it as one of the summer’s successes, indicating the film industry’s ongoing recovery.
In fourth place, MGM Studios’ new psychological thriller “Blink Twice” earned $7.3 million. Directed by actress ZoĆ« Kravitz in her directorial debut, the film stars Naomi Ackie as a cocktail waitress who visits a tech billionaire’s mysterious island, played by Channing Tatum. The cast also features Christian Slater, Kyle MacLachlan, Haley Joel Osment, and Geena Davis. Gross noted that in the crowded crime thriller genre, a film’s success often depends on its cast.
Sony’s biblical drama “The Forge” debuted in fifth place with $6.6 million, a solid start for a film that cost $5 million to produce. A spinoff from the 2015 inspirational drama “War Room,” it follows a 19-year-old who finds direction and motivation to turn his life around.
Rounding out the top 10 were:
- “Twisters” ($6.2 million)
- “Coraline” (re-release, $5 million)
- “The Crow” ($4.6 million)
- “Despicable Me 4” ($4.4 million)
- “Inside Out 2” ($2.1 million)
