Video: Crisis in Lebanon: French envoy leaves Beirut empty-handed

French special envoy Jean-Yves Le Drian left Beirut on Thursday without securing an agreement among Lebanonโ€™s political factions to elect a president. Despite meeting with key political figures, including Hezbollah, he was unable to make significant progress. Le Drian warned that Lebanonโ€™s political existence is at risk due to the deadlock since President Michel Aounโ€™s term ended in October 2022. This stalemate persists amid an economic crisis and regional tensions. In Paris, efforts continue to support Lebanonโ€™s sovereignty and stability, emphasizing the need to resolve the institutional crisis and elect a new president. France has proposed a plan to reduce border violence, but Israel has yet to respond. Le Drianโ€™s visit also aimed to prepare for President Joe Bidenโ€™s upcoming visit to France, where the Lebanese situation may be discussed.
