French special envoy Jean-Yves Le Drian left Beirut on Thursday without securing an agreement among Lebanon’s political factions to elect a president. Despite meeting with key political figures, including Hezbollah, he was unable to make significant progress. Le Drian warned that Lebanon’s political existence is at risk due to the deadlock since President Michel Aoun’s term ended in October 2022. This stalemate persists amid an economic crisis and regional tensions. In Paris, efforts continue to support Lebanon’s sovereignty and stability, emphasizing the need to resolve the institutional crisis and elect a new president. France has proposed a plan to reduce border violence, but Israel has yet to respond. Le Drian’s visit also aimed to prepare for President Joe Biden’s upcoming visit to France, where the Lebanese situation may be discussed.
