On Friday, Carlo Ancelotti committed to a contract extension with Real Madrid until June 2026, effectively removing himself from consideration as the next coach for Brazil’s national team.
Real Madrid confirmed in a statement that an agreement had been reached to extend Ancelotti’s contract until June 30, 2026. Previously, there had been speculation, reported in July, that the 64-year-old Ancelotti would become Brazil’s first foreign coach in nearly six decades after his initial contract with Real Madrid ended next year.
Fernando Diniz had been appointed as Brazil’s interim manager, with expectations that Ancelotti would take over for the 2024 Copa America. Ednaldo Rodriguez, the then-president of the Brazil Football Confederation (CBF), had conducted extensive negotiations with Ancelotti, who had mentioned that his role at Real Madrid would be his final position in football.
However, the opportunity to continue at one of football’s most prestigious clubs seems to have influenced Ancelotti’s decision. Rodrigues, speaking to beIN Sports earlier in the year, praised Ancelotti not just for his professional achievements but also for his personal qualities, describing him as open, cultured, and appreciative of Brazilian football.
Under the interim management of Diniz, Brazil has faced ongoing challenges on the field and currently holds the sixth and final regional qualifying spot for the 2026 World Cup.
Ancelotti is widely recognized as one of the greatest football coaches in history. He has achieved significant success, including four Champions League titles – two with AC Milan and two with Real Madrid. Additionally, Ancelotti has clinched domestic league titles with Real Madrid, AC Milan, Chelsea in England, Bayern Munich in Germany, and Paris Saint-Germain in France.
