The United Nations is raising concerns over the escalating number of displaced individuals in the Gaza Strip, as Israeli military activities extend into central and southern regions.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) recently reported a significant influx of at least 100,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) into Rafah, Gaza’s southernmost city. This migration follows increased hostilities in nearby areas like Khan Younis and Deir Al Balah and evacuation orders from the Israeli army.
Rafah, already known for its high population density with over 12,000 individuals per square kilometer, is facing further strain due to this influx. Additionally, Deir Al Balah in central Gaza is experiencing a similar surge in displaced populations. The OCHA highlighted that online maps and instructions from Israeli authorities directed residents to seek shelter in Deir Al Balah, despite existing overcrowding and the area hosting several hundred thousand IDPs. The full extent of displacement due to this evacuation order is still uncertain.
The OCHA also relayed World Health Organization data indicating a rise in disease outbreaks in Gaza, particularly due to the recent mass displacements in the southern regions. Many families have had to relocate multiple times. The health challenges are significant, with close to 180,000 people in shelters suffering from upper respiratory infections, over 136,400 cases of diarrhea (half in children under five), and thousands of cases of lice, scabies, skin rashes, jaundice, and meningitis.
These health crises are exacerbated by the lack of food, basic necessities, and poor hygiene, worsening the living conditions of IDPs and increasing the spread of diseases. The OCHA emphasized the amplification of protection and mental health issues among the displaced populations.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military continues its operations in Khan Younis and Rafah, targeting multiple locations, including residential units and infrastructure. These strikes have led to a high number of fatalities in areas where Palestinians have recently moved.
Israel has been urging residents in various parts of Gaza to evacuate, but the UN has warned of the limited options for safe relocation. A CNN analysis revealed that Israel has targeted at least three locations in Gaza where civilians were instructed to evacuate since the conflict’s onset in October.
