Biden Expresses Disappointment and Frustration with Israel’s Hard-Right Government

President Joe Biden addressed frustrations, setbacks, and disappointments with Israel’s hard-right government but noted a growing optimism for a cease-fire to end the devastating Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza.

During a highly anticipated press conference following the NATO summit, Biden reflected on his efforts in the Israel-Hamas war. He described Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration as the most conservative Israeli government he has encountered. Biden mentioned that he had advised Israeli leaders against emulating the U.S. strategies used against al-Qaida and other militant groups, cautioning them against doubling down on such approaches.

Biden expressed his disappointment that some initiatives, including his directive for the U.S. military to construct a pier to deliver aid to Gaza by sea, had not been as successful as hoped.

However, he noted a positive development: both Israel and Hamas have agreed on the general terms of a deal to pause fighting and release hostages. Biden stated that mediators are currently working to bridge remaining gaps in the agreement, increasing the likelihood of a cease-fire.
