Bassil Clarifies Stance on Hezbollah Relationship

Gebran Bassil, the leader of the Free Patriotic Movement (FPM) in Lebanon, has consistently expressed pride in his independence within the complex Lebanese political landscape. He recently reaffirmed this position, clarifying in an interview with Nidaa al-Watan newspaper that he has no political allies, including the long-standing relationship with Hezbollah, which he describes more as an understanding than an alliance.

In the context of Lebanese politics, Bassil’s stance is significant, especially regarding the recent decision to extend the tenure of army chief General Joseph Aoun. This extension was made despite the FPM’s objections, with Bassil suggesting that those who supported it were either spiteful, seeking to appease others, or acting under external pressure. He views this action as unconstitutional and an overreach of the government’s powers, particularly in the absence of presidential approval.

Lebanon’s political situation remains precarious, lacking a president for over a year since Michel Aoun’s term ended. The two main political factions, Hezbollah and its opponents, have been unable to secure the majority needed for a presidential election. Within this framework, Bassil maintains that Jihad Azour is the FPM’s choice for the presidency, aligning with opposition forces including the Lebanese Forces, the FPM’s political adversary.

Bassil also commented on the potential election of Suleiman Franjieh, Hezbollah and Amal’s candidate, stating his acceptance would be contingent on the implementation of specific laws related to decentralization and the creation of a sovereign fund. This stance underscores the ongoing political complexities and negotiations within Lebanon’s fragmented political system.
