Al-Rahi Opposes Tying Presidential Vote to Gaza Conflict

In a sermon during the New Year’s Day Mass, Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi emphasized that Lebanon’s presidential election should remain separate from the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Al-Rahi expressed dissatisfaction with the excuses being used to delay the presidential election, deeming them unsatisfactory. He specifically addressed claims, as reported in the media, that some factions are demanding a permanent ceasefire in Gaza before proceeding with Lebanon’s presidential election. Al-Rahi strongly criticized this condition, labeling it regrettable and entirely unacceptable.

He further reiterated the responsibility of the parliament, assuming its independence, to convene and carry out the presidential election. Al-Rahi highlighted that suitable and well-known candidates are already in the fray, underscoring the urgency and feasibility of conducting the election without external influences.
