LeBron James makes history: First NBA player to reach 40,000 points

On Saturday, March 2, LeBron James made history by becoming the first player in the NBA to amass 40,000 career points during the regular season. The 39-year-old basketball icon reached this milestone while playing against the Denver Nuggets, the current champions, by scoring nine points.

James, who surpassed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s record as the NBA’s highest scorer just a year prior, has an illustrious career that includes four NBA championships and four MVP titles. Currently, he is the league’s most senior active player, marking his 21st season.

Lakers coach Darvin Ham praised James for his dedication and high level of play throughout his career, recognizing the milestone as a monumental achievement.

James achieved the milestone early in the game, with a layup in the second quarter that secured his 40,000th point, eliciting a standing ovation from the audience. The ball used for this historic moment was subsequently taken out of play.

Earlier in the game, James had already made significant contributions, including a fast break layup and a three-pointer, which helped the Lakers gain an early lead over the Nuggets.

James, reflecting on reaching the 40,000-point mark, stated that while it may not rank as his highest achievement, it holds significant value. He acknowledged the importance of milestones in his career, emphasizing that each achievement, including this one, has its unique place and meaning.

The Lakers are currently positioned 10th in the Western Conference, aiming for the final play-in spot, whereas the Nuggets are ranked third, closely trailing the leading Minnesota.

In other NBA action, Mikal Bridges led the Brooklyn Nets to a victory over Atlanta with 38 points, and Jimmy Butler scored 37 points to help the Miami Heat defeat Utah.
