Excitement among Formula 1 enthusiasts is mounting over the possibility of Sebastian Vettel making a comeback, following Mercedes team leader Toto Wolff’s mention of the German driver as a potential successor for Lewis Hamilton.
In an interview with Sky Germany, Wolff highlighted Vettel’s capacity to still be competitive in F1, emphasizing the decision Mercedes faces in the near future between opting for a youthful driver or leaning on someone with extensive experience.
“Sebastian is an exceptional individual and a legend in the sport. I believe he retains his quickness. We’ll need to make a choice after a few races on whether to invest in youth or experience. Alternatively, could we find a middle ground, allowing the younger drivers more time to mature?,” Wolff remarked.
Vettel, on his part, speaking to Neue Zürcher Zeitung, shared his astonishment over Hamilton’s switch to Ferrari, noting that while he hadn’t received a call from Wolff, they had exchanged messages.
“I found the switch surprising. Toto Wolff and I didn’t have a phone conversation, but we did send texts back and forth,” Vettel shared.
“Yet, it’s currently not something I’m focusing on, especially since, at 36, I believe I still have plenty of time. So, I’m not in a hurry.”
The former RedBull champion, who boasts four titles and 53 race wins, emphasized that his perspective hasn’t shifted despite his year away from racing, during which he gained significant insights about himself and the sport.
“My outlook remains unchanged. The past year, being away from racing, has been enlightening for me in many ways, prompting a lot of reflection. As of now, there are no definite plans to return to racing.”
Vettel ended his F1 career at the close of the 2022 season, following a triumphant period with Red Bull and a less successful six-year tenure at Ferrari, failing to secure a fifth championship. He spent his last two seasons with Aston Martin.
Speculation around Vettel’s potential return to F1 has intensified following 39-year-old Hamilton’s decision to join Ferrari, triggered by his desire to “race in Ferrari red,” a dream too compelling for him to pass up.
