Biden Grants Temporary Protection to Palestinians in US

In a recent decision, President Joe Biden has offered temporary relief to Palestinians residing in the United States from the threat of deportation, in response to the escalating conflict in their home region. This action is taken amidst growing calls from the Arab-American community for the US to take a stand on the crisis in Gaza.

Previously, members of the Democratic party had appealed to President Biden to provide temporary protection to Palestinians in the US. They argued that, in line with Biden’s commitment to safeguard Palestinian civilians, individuals from the conflict-ridden territories should not be compelled to return.

The president exercised his authority to implement a policy known as deferred enforced departure, which temporarily shields eligible individuals from being deported from the US. Furthermore, this protection extends to granting work authorization to those who qualify.

National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan announced, “Considering the current conflict and the pressing humanitarian needs, President Biden has issued a directive to postpone the deportation of certain Palestinians present in the US, thus offering them a provisional sanctuary.” According to the directive, Biden has approved deferred enforced departure for an 18-month period for Palestinians who are currently in the United States.

However, this temporary protection does not extend to individuals who have been convicted of serious crimes or are considered a threat to public safety.
