Highlights: Nations League: Yamal and Williams Shine as Spain Edge France in Nine-Goal Thriller

Spain secured a place in the 2025 UEFA Nations League final after a dramatic 5-4 victory over France in Stuttgart on June 5. The semi-final match at the MHP Arena saw Spain establish a commanding 5-1 lead before France mounted a late comeback that ultimately fell short. The win sets up an all-Iberian final against Portugal, scheduled for June 8 at Munich’s Allianz Arena.

Spain’s early dominance was evident as Nico Williams opened the scoring, followed by Mikel Merino doubling the lead within the first 25 minutes. Shortly after halftime, Lamine Yamal converted a penalty, and Pedri added a fourth goal. Yamal then scored his second, extending Spain’s advantage to 5-1. France responded with goals from Kylian Mbappé, Rayan Cherki, an own goal by Dani Vivian, and a stoppage-time header from Randal Kolo Muani, but Spain managed to hold on for the win.

This high-scoring encounter marked the first time France conceded five goals in a match since 1969. Spain’s victory continues their impressive run under coach Luis de la Fuente, having lost only once in over two years, a period that includes winning the Euro 2024 title. The upcoming final against Portugal offers Spain the opportunity to secure their second consecutive Nations League title and further solidify their position at the pinnacle of European football.
