Wonder Woman: James Gunn Reveals When Wonder Woman Will Return to the DCU

Wonder Woman’s Future in the DCU: Updates Remain Limited as Superman Leads the Charge

Since the formal unveiling of the new DC Universe (DCU) under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran, major progress has been made on two of the franchise’s iconic characters—Superman and Batman. With a new Superman film well underway and Batman: The Brave and the Bold in active pre-production, attention is now turning to the third member of DC’s core trinity: Wonder Woman. However, developments surrounding the Amazonian warrior have been notably scarce.

Initial announcements included a prequel television series centered on Themyscira, the mythical island inhabited by the Amazons. That series, focused on the origins of Wonder Woman’s homeland, promised a Game of Thrones-style political and mythological drama. Despite that, concrete details about a new Wonder Woman solo film have yet to surface, leaving fans eager for more definitive news.

Following the recent release of the official Superman trailer, James Gunn was asked directly about Wonder Woman’s status within the DCU. His response was brief but optimistic—stating that the matter was not ready to be discussed publicly, but progress was being made. Though vague, his statement has been interpreted as a positive indication that an announcement could be on the horizon.

Industry rumors have also begun to circulate regarding casting. One name that has surfaced repeatedly is Adria Arjona, known for her role in Andor, as a possible candidate to take on the mantle of Wonder Woman in the rebooted franchise. While no confirmation has been provided by DC Studios, fan speculation suggests a formal reveal could follow the July release of Superman.

DC Studios is heavily focused on the upcoming Superman feature, which is slated to hit theaters and IMAX on July 11. The film stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan in the role of Lois Lane, aiming to set the tone for the broader cinematic universe going forward. Promotional efforts for Superman have been ramping up, as evidenced by social media campaigns and teaser drops from official DCU channels.

In the meantime, fans will need to wait for official word on Diana of Themyscira’s return to the big screen. While updates have been minimal so far, signs point toward her inclusion in the evolving DCU, with potential casting news and project confirmations likely to follow once current flagship projects are further along in their rollout.
