West Ham secured the signing of Manchester United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka on Tuesday for a reported fee of ยฃ15 million ($19 million). The 26-year-old right-back, who has agreed to a seven-year deal with the Hammers, departs Old Trafford after five years, during which he made 190 appearances following his 2019 transfer from Crystal Palace.
Wan-Bissaka, who featured in Unitedโs surprising FA Cup final victory over Manchester City last season, was not part of manager Erik ten Hagโs plans for the new campaign. โItโs an incredible feeling to be back in London, and Iโm really looking forward to whatโs ahead,โ Wan-Bissaka shared. โBeing born here and knowing London inside out, itโs special for me to return to play in this city.โ
Manchester United is expected to bring in Bayern Munich right-back Noussair Mazraoui as Wan-Bissakaโs replacement. Wan-Bissaka becomes West Hamโs eighth signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Jean-Clair Todibo, Crysencio Summerville, Luis Guilherme, Niclas Fullkrug, Wes Foderingham, Max Kilman, and Guido Rodriguez.
โI canโt wait to get out on the pitch, meet my new teammates, and move forward together,โ Wan-Bissaka added. โI see a team that is united, one that pushes each other to succeed, and a group that has each otherโs backs through everything.โ
West Hamโs technical director Tim Steidten highlighted the value of Wan-Bissakaโs Premier League experience for new manager Julen Lopetegui. Wan-Bissaka is set to potentially make his debut in West Hamโs Premier League opener against Aston Villa on August 17.
โHeโs precisely the kind of player we want to bring to this club during the peak of his career,โ Steidten remarked. โWan-Bissaka is an exceptionally skilled defender, especially in one-on-one situations, and his versatility is another major asset. With over 170 Premier League games under his belt, he has a deep understanding of the league.โ
