Watch: Venom Dominates, Tops North American Box Office

The new superhero film *Venom: The Last Dance* from Columbia and Marvel opened to a strong performance at the North American box office, leading with an estimated $51 million in ticket sales, though it didn’t quite reach the debut figures of its predecessors, according to industry reports.

The previous film, *Venom: Let There Be Carnage*, premiered in 2021 with a $96 million weekend. However, *The Last Dance* had competition for viewers due to a baseball World Series showdown between the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers. Tom Hardy returns as the brooding journalist who transforms into the monstrous Venom, complete with jagged teeth and a “Gene Simmons” tongue. The cast also includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Juno Temple, and Rhys Ifans.

With Halloween just around the corner, *Smile 2*, a horror film from Paramount, held onto a strong position, bringing in $40.7 million, down just one spot from last week’s debut. Naomi Scott stars as a haunted pop star grappling with a disturbing curse.

In third place, FilmNation’s religious thriller *Conclave* earned $6.5 million. Ralph Fiennes stars as a cardinal navigating the shadowy politics and personal dilemmas surrounding the election of a new pope. Fellow cardinals played by Stanley Tucci and John Lithgow add to the intrigue, while Isabella Rossellini portrays a formidable nun. The film, directed by Edward Berger, is based on Robert Harris’s thriller and has received rave reviews, positioning it as an Oscars contender.

Landing in fourth was Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s *The Wild Robot*, an animated tale of a robot stranded on an island who must adapt to life among wild creatures, which earned $6.5 million.

Rounding out the top five was the StudioCanal romantic drama *We Live in Time*, starring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, with $4.8 million.

The rest of the top 10 included:

  • Terrifier 3 – $4.8 million
  • Beetlejuice Beetlejuice – $3.2 million
  • Anora – $867,000
  • Piece by Piece – $720,000
  • Transformers One – $720,000
