Watch: US Warns Iran of ‘Cataclysmic’ Consequences for Attacking Israel

A U.S. official issued a strong warning that Iran would face severe consequences and risk halting progress toward a Gaza ceasefire if it chooses to strike Israel in retaliation for the killing of a senior Hamas leader.

The official, speaking anonymously to reporters, emphasized, “The United States would advise the Iranians — and many are already considering this — not to take that path, as the consequences could be catastrophic, especially for Iran.”

Earlier on Friday, President Joe Biden mentioned that a ceasefire in the 10-month Gaza conflict seemed closer than ever, following two days of negotiations in Qatar, where U.S. mediators presented a proposal aimed at bridging remaining differences.

The U.S. official highlighted, “It was Hamas, an Iranian proxy, that initiated this conflict on October 7. It would be paradoxical if Iran were to take action that could derail what we believe to be the most promising chance in months for a comprehensive ceasefire and a hostage release agreement.”

Iran has previously warned Israel of retaliation for the July 31 attack in Tehran that killed Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh, an attack widely attributed to Israel, though Israel has not officially taken responsibility.

On Friday, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz, during a joint meeting with his British and French counterparts, expressed his expectation for support in targeting key sites within Iran if the Islamic Republic strikes Israel.

When asked about Katz’s remarks, the U.S. official responded that the United States, along with Britain and France, is preparing for “every possible scenario.”

“We are fully committed to defending Israel against any potential attacks from Iran,” the official stated.
