US Unveils Blueprint to Push Hezbollah from Israeli Border

Amos Hochstein, the Middle East envoy for U.S. President Joe Biden, presented a detailed plan aimed at reducing the ongoing tensions between Israel and Hezbollah during his recent visit to Israel, as reported by the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth.

The proposed settlement is divided into two stages. Initially, Hezbollah would halt its hostile activities near the Israel-Lebanon border and withdraw approximately eight to ten kilometers northward. Concurrently, Israeli civilians would be able to safely return to their homes. This phase also involves a substantial deployment of the Lebanese army and UNIFIL peacekeepers to ensure stability in the southern region of Lebanon and along the border.

The second part of the plan involves Israel and Lebanon initiating discussions to define their land border, addressing 13 contested areas along their shared boundary. In tandem, the U.S. and other international entities would consider providing economic benefits to Lebanon as part of this process.

While the Lebanese government has reportedly approved Hochstein’s proposal, it is still uncertain if Hezbollah is in agreement with the suggested terms.

During his visit, Hochstein met with several key Israeli officials, including President Isaac Herzog, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and Minister Benny Gantz, to advocate for the adoption of his plan. Yedioth Ahronoth reported these details of his engagements.

Defense Minister Gallant, in discussions with Hochstein, reaffirmed Israel’s commitment to enhancing security in northern Israel. This commitment entails facilitating the safe return of residents to northern areas following the neutralization of threats, such as raids and direct attacks originating from Lebanese territory.

Gallant also explored various diplomatic approaches with Hochstein to resolve the conflict, stressing Israel’s dedication to the security of its northern citizens. He acknowledged that while Israel prefers a diplomatic resolution, it remains prepared for other eventualities. Gallant expressed gratitude towards Hochstein for his efforts to bring about a political solution and improve the situation at Israel’s northern border.

Minister Gantz, in his meeting with Hochstein, appreciated the significant role of the United States in tackling regional challenges. He also emphasized to Hochstein the responsibility of Lebanon for any terrorist activities originating from its territory. Gantz warned that Israel would intensify its military actions to eliminate threats unless the international community and Lebanon effectively address these issues. This stance remains firm irrespective of the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
