US Strikes on Yemen Migrant Center Kill 68

A U.S. airstrike reportedly targeted a detention facility in Yemen’s Saada governorate, resulting in the deaths of at least 68 African migrants and injuring 47 others. The facility, housing over 100 detainees, was allegedly struck as part of the ongoing Operation Rough Rider, a U.S. military campaign against Houthi rebels. The U.S. military has not confirmed this specific incident.

The strike has drawn international concern, with the International Organization for Migration expressing deep worry over the loss of civilian lives. This event echoes a similar 2022 incident where a Saudi-led coalition airstrike hit the same compound, causing significant casualties.

Operation Rough Rider, initiated in March 2025, aims to dismantle Houthi capabilities following their attacks on Red Sea shipping lanes. The campaign has involved over 800 airstrikes, targeting Houthi infrastructure and leadership. Despite these efforts, the Houthis continue to pose challenges, including downing U.S. drones and maintaining their operations.

The conflict in Yemen has severely impacted African migrants, who often transit through the country en route to Gulf nations. Many face detention, abuse, and even death amid the ongoing hostilities.
