U.S. prosecutors have accused President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, of receiving payments from a Romanian businessman seeking to influence U.S. government agencies. This accusation arose during an ongoing criminal tax case against Hunter Biden.
The U.S. Department of Justice made the allegation in a court filing on Wednesday (August 7) in Los Angeles, where Hunter Biden is scheduled to stand trial for tax evasion charges on September 9. Hunter Biden has pleaded not guilty.
According to an ABC report, the claim involves Hunter Biden’s work with a wealthy Romanian businessman identified as “G P.” Reuters suggests that “G P” might be Gabriel Popoviciu, although this has not been confirmed.
Prosecutors allege that “G P” hired Hunter Biden for legal work in 2015 while Joe Biden was Vice President under President Barack Obama. They plan to present evidence that Hunter Biden and an associate received payments from this businessman, who was attempting to influence U.S. policy and public opinion to investigate a Romanian investigation of “G P.”
The prosecutors assert that Hunter Biden and his associate were concerned about the political implications of their lobbying work on Joe Biden. They further claim that Hunter Biden sought to hide the true nature of his work for “G P.”
Hunter Biden’s tax case dates back to last December, when a grand jury indicted him for failing to pay $1.4 million in taxes from 2016 to 2019, despite spending millions on drugs and luxury items. He also faced charges of deliberately evading tax assessment for 2018 by submitting fraudulent returns. Hunter Biden is charged with three felonies and additional misdemeanors.
In a separate trial in June this year, Hunter Biden was convicted by a Delaware jury of lying about illegal drug use when purchasing a handgun in 2018. He is still awaiting sentencing for that conviction.
