U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has escalated military readiness by deploying a guided missile submarine to the Middle East and expediting the movement of the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier strike group to the region, according to a recent announcement from the Defense Department. This action is part of a broader initiative by the U.S. and its allies to mediate a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, amidst heightened tensions following the assassination of Hamas’s political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and a senior Hezbollah commander in Beirut.
The Pentagon has heightened its surveillance for potential retaliatory strikes by Iran and Hezbollah following these assassinations. In a statement, Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder highlighted that Secretary Austin, in a conversation with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, reaffirmed America’s dedication to defending Israel and enhancing U.S. military capabilities in the Middle East due to increasing regional tensions.
Previously stationed in the Asia Pacific, the USS Abraham Lincoln, equipped with F-35 and F/A-18 fighter jets, was already destined for the Central Command area to replace the USS Theodore Roosevelt. Although it’s unclear how soon the Lincoln and the USS Georgia guided missile submarine will reach their destinations, their deployment underscores the U.S. commitment to its strategic interests in the region.
Additionally, Austin and Gallant discussed the ongoing military operations in Gaza, emphasizing the need to minimize civilian casualties. This discussion follows a recent Israeli airstrike on a school in Gaza used as a shelter, which resulted in at least 80 fatalities and nearly 50 injuries, marking it as one of the most devastating strikes in the current conflict.
