UNIFIL’s Head of Mission and Force Commander, Lt. Gen. Aroldo Lázaro, highlighted the tension along the Blue Line, emphasizing that Ramadan, traditionally a period of peace and introspection, has been marred by the current situation. In a statement released in observance of Eid El Fitr, Lázaro appealed for a halt to hostilities and a push towards a lasting ceasefire and comprehensive resolution to the ongoing conflict.
Lázaro detailed UNIFIL’s efforts since October to encourage adherence to resolution 1701 by all parties involved, alongside various initiatives aimed at reducing tensions and averting further conflict. These initiatives include providing essential medical services, implementing solar energy projects, donating equipment to educational and health institutions, and distributing food and infant formula to those in need throughout southern Lebanon.
He also mentioned UNIFIL’s role in ensuring the safety of personnel engaged in repairing vital civilian infrastructure damaged during conflicts and in coordinating the delivery of humanitarian aid.
Lázaro pledged UNIFIL’s continued support and commitment to peace in the region for as long as necessary. He warned about the significant risk of escalation and firmly stated that there is no military resolution to the ongoing issues, advocating instead for a political and diplomatic approach as the sole viable solution.
In the spirit of Eid, Lázaro called on all parties to embrace unity and compassion, urging them to pursue peace irrespective of their faith or background.
