The chief of the UN agency in Gaza, facing accusations that its staff were involved in Hamas attacks against Israel, has expressed deep concern over the suspension of funds by several countries. Philippe Lazzarini, the Commissioner-General of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), described these decisions as “shocking” and called for a reassessment.
Lazzarini emphasized the critical role of UNRWA in providing essential services like food and healthcare in Gaza, where over a million people rely on the agency’s aid. He warned of a potential famine and stressed that the aid is crucial not only for the people of Gaza but also for regional stability.
Following the firing of UNRWA employees allegedly involved in the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks, nine countries have decided to temporarily withdraw their funding, according to Lazzarini.
While the Israeli government has yet to disclose specifics about the UNRWA’s purported involvement, Lazzarini stated that the UN’s highest investigative body is already addressing the issue, and an independent external review is expected.
Lazzarini also referenced a recent decision by the International Court of Justice, which instructed Israel to facilitate increased humanitarian aid to Gaza to prevent genocide. He underscored the importance of collaboration with international partners, particularly UNRWA, to achieve this goal, given its significant humanitarian role in Gaza.
