UN Peacekeeping Chief Urges Army Redeployment in South to Resolve War

The head of U.N. peacekeeping, responsible for overseeing operations in southern Lebanon, emphasized the importance of redeploying Lebanese troops to the region as a key step toward resolving the ongoing conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, which escalated into open war in September.

Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the Under Secretary-General for Peace Operations, stressed that restoring Lebanese armed forces in the south is essential for achieving a lasting resolution. Speaking during a press briefing near Beirut at the conclusion of his three-day visit to Lebanon, he highlighted Security Council Resolution 1701 as the framework to stabilize the area and build a path forward.

In his discussions with top Lebanese officials, including Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, Prime Minister Najib Mikati, Defense Minister Maurice Sleem, Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib, and Lebanese Army Commander General Joseph Aoun, Lacroix emphasized the importance of both Lebanon and Israel fully adhering to their commitments under the resolution.

Lacroix also engaged with diplomats and representatives of countries contributing troops to the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). He expressed deep appreciation for their support of the mission and for maintaining stability along the Blue Line, despite the challenging environment.

Lacroix commended the efforts of peacekeepers from nearly 50 countries, acknowledging their dedication in carrying out their duties under difficult conditions. “Their work helps create and sustain the space needed for political and diplomatic solutions to take shape,” he said, expressing gratitude for their commitment.

During a visit to UNIFIL’s headquarters in Naqoura and a position in Mansouri, Lacroix met with both military and civilian peacekeepers, including those injured in recent attacks and crossfire. He reiterated the U.N.’s call for an end to hostilities and its support for diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a full implementation of Resolution 1701.

This marked Lacroix’s third visit to Lebanon this year, underscoring the U.N.’s ongoing focus on fostering peace and stability in the region.
