Iconic Singer Umm Kalthoum Aids in Healing War Trauma for Arabs and Jews

In a Tel Aviv theater, amidst the tensions of the Hamas-Israel conflict, the melodies of Egyptian singer Umm Kalthoum bring together Arabs and Jews. Directed by Igal Ezraty, the play features three Arab and three Jewish performers, blending Hebrew dialogue with Arabic songs. Ezraty emphasizes that Arabic isn’t solely the language of Hamas but also a language of beauty and nostalgia for many Israelis, reminiscent of their parents’ and childhood language.

The play, titled “Umm Kalthoum,” celebrates the life of the beloved Egyptian artist, known as “the lady” and “star of the Orient.” Her music, which spanned 60 years and continued to enchant after her death in 1975, is a central theme. Israeli actress Galit Giat, with her Algerian and Yemeni heritage, portrays Umm Kalthoum, bringing her songs to life, accompanied by Ala Abu Amara on the oud.

However, the play faced a temporary halt following the deadly border incursion by Hamas militants on October 7 and Israel’s subsequent intense bombardment of Gaza.

At Jaffa Theatre, where the play is staged bi-monthly, audiences, including Jews and Arabs, momentarily escape the war’s reality. Giat describes the play as a breath of fresh air, a connection to her cultural roots and childhood memories of her grandparents’ home filled with classical Egyptian music.

The play, transcending religious and cultural divides, features a diverse cast of Christians, Muslims, and Jews. Audience member Shaia reflects on the hope for peace and the significance of the play in fostering understanding between Arabs and Jews.

However, Arab-Israeli actors in the play, part of a community with deep roots in the land since before Israel’s establishment in 1948, expressed reservations about speaking publicly, highlighting the complexities they face in such a role.

Ezraty notes the challenges for Palestinians in Israel, including fear of speaking Arabic and repercussions for expressing views online, with some instances leading to arrests.

On stage, Umm Kalthoum is depicted in her home, surrounded by significant figures in her life. Her journey from poverty to fame, winning over political leaders and captivating audiences in the Middle East and the West, is showcased. Her global influence is highlighted by admiration from icons like Bob Dylan and Beyonce.

The play concludes with a poignant tribute to Umm Kalthoum, displaying footage of her funeral in Cairo, attended by millions of mourners.
