British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak emphasized on Saturday that the devastating conflict between Israel and Hamas needs to conclude, marking six months since its onset.
Sunak reiterated the UK’s support for Israel’s defense against Hamas but expressed profound concern over the ongoing violence. He advocated for an immediate end to the conflict, the release of hostages, and a significant increase in aid delivery efforts through various means.
The conflict, which began on October 7 with a severe attack by Hamas, led to significant casualties and the taking of numerous hostages, including Israeli and foreign nationals, with some reported deceased by the Israeli military.
Sunak highlighted the historical significance of the attack, describing it as the most severe in Israel’s history and the most significant loss of Jewish lives since World War II. He noted the enduring impact on Israeli families and the continued captivity of hostages by Hamas.
The Prime Minister called for an immediate humanitarian pause, aiming for a long-term ceasefire to facilitate the release of hostages and aid delivery, underscoring the need for peace and security for both Israelis and Palestinians.
In response to the killing of seven aid workers in Gaza, including three British nationals, the UK government has urged for a transparent and independent investigation. This incident has also prompted calls for the UK to review its arms export policies to Israel, with significant weapons sales recorded over the past years.
Furthermore, the UK plans to deploy a Royal Navy ship to assist with aid delivery to Gaza and announced a substantial aid package to support a humanitarian corridor, emphasizing the importance of exploring all options to alleviate the suffering in Gaza as stated by Foreign Secretary David Cameron.
