Watch: Trump Vows to Hit India with ‘Reciprocal Tariffs’ if Re-Elected

In a speech on Thursday, former US President Donald Trump pledged to implement a “reciprocal tax” if re-elected, criticizing India for imposing the highest tariffs among major countries. Speaking in Detroit, Trump emphasized the need for reciprocity in trade, highlighting that the US does not generally charge significant tariffs, while countries like China, Brazil, and especially India, impose high tariffs on American products.

“India is a major tariff charger,” Trump said. He acknowledged the strong relationship he had with India and praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “great leader” who has united the country. However, Trump pointed out that India, despite its friendly approach, charges very high tariffs on foreign goods, often higher than those imposed by China.

He recounted an experience during his presidency when Harley-Davidson executives visited the White House, explaining the challenges they faced in India due to the high tariffs—around 150%. Trump noted that while India encouraged Harley-Davidson to set up manufacturing within the country to avoid these charges, he expressed displeasure with the situation. He explained that such practices push companies to move operations abroad, resulting in the closure of facilities in the US.

Trump referred to Modi as “the nicest human being” and a “friend,” but also described him as a strong, determined leader. He fondly recalled Modi’s visit to Houston in 2019 for the ‘Howdy Modi’ event, where 80,000 people welcomed them enthusiastically.

Trump also shared an anecdote about a time when someone threatened India, and he offered to assist. Modi, however, confidently declined, stating that India had dealt with such threats for centuries. Trump expressed admiration for Modi’s strength and leadership, reiterating the close relationship they shared.
