Tottenham Hotspur has acquired Timo Werner on loan from Leipzig as of Tuesday, providing the German forward with another opportunity to prove himself in the Premier League following his mixed performance with Chelsea.
Werner, 27, has signed a six-month contract with Tottenham, which includes an option to finalize the transfer permanently in the summer.
His arrival at Spurs is timely, as he will fill the vacancy left by Son Heung-min, who is away at the Asian Cup with South Korea until potentially mid-February.
This move could also enhance Werner’s prospects for the upcoming European Championship, set to take place in Germany this summer.
Werner’s tenure at Chelsea, spanning from 2020 to 2022, saw him contribute to their Champions League victory. However, his overall performance in England was considered somewhat disappointing, with a record of 23 goals in 89 appearances.
After returning to Leipzig in the summer of 2022, Werner scored 16 goals last season. Despite this, he has only started four games under Leipzig’s coach Marco Rose this season.
Werner expressed optimism about the move, citing positive discussions with Tottenham’s Australian manager, Ange Postecoglou. He was impressed by Postecoglou’s vision and tactics, feeling that the manager’s approach and the team’s style of play were a perfect fit for him.
The financial terms of the deal have not been revealed.
