Syria Open to Reviving 1974 Deal with US and Israel

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani announced on Friday that Syria is open to working with the United States to restore the disengagement agreement signed with Israel in 1974. This message was conveyed during a phone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, marking a rare instance of diplomatic engagement between Damascus and Washington.

During the call, Shaibani stated that Syria views cooperation with the United States as a potential pathway to reestablish the framework laid out in the 1974 accord. That agreement, brokered by the U.S. following the 1973 Yom Kippur War, was designed to reduce hostilities and establish a buffer zone between Syrian and Israeli forces in the Golan Heights. Though tensions have remained over the decades, the agreement played a stabilizing role for much of that period.
