Luis Suarez and Jordi Alba found the net as Inter Miami kicked off their first MLS Cup playoff run in the Lionel Messi era with a 2-1 victory over Atlanta United on Friday.
A win in the second match of this best-of-three series on November 2 in Atlanta could secure Miami’s place in the Eastern Conference semi-finals. Miami, the playoffs’ top seed, started strong, with Suarez scoring in the second minute. Alba, also formerly of Barcelona, set up Diego Gomez, who assisted Suarez for a close-range finish.
Atlanta, entering the playoffs after a wildcard win over Montreal, struggled to find their footing as Miami dominated early possession, keeping Atlanta’s keeper, Brad Guzan, on high alert. Alba linked up with Messi, whose well-placed strike forced a diving save from Guzan, now 40 years old.
Atlanta faced an early setback when winger Brooks Lennon exited in the 21st minute, followed by another crucial save by Guzan off a Messi shot from 25 yards out. Just a minute later, Miami almost extended their lead when David Martinez’s header struck the post. Messi also hit the woodwork, narrowly missing the near post, while Marcelo Weigandt’s powerful shot stretched Guzan’s abilities.
Despite Miami’s relentless pressure, Atlanta managed to equalize in the 39th minute. Pedro Amador’s pass set up Saba Lobzhanidze, whose left-footed shot found the bottom corner. Atlanta even came close to taking the lead before halftime when Alexey Miranchuk set up Jamal Thiare, but Thiare’s shot lacked accuracy.
The first round’s unique playoff format, where ties go straight to penalties, kept Atlanta hopeful for an upset. But in the 60th minute, Miami capitalized on a lapse in Atlanta’s defense. After a quick short-corner exchange with Messi, Alba unleashed a powerful 25-yard strike past Guzan, reclaiming Miami’s lead.
Messi had one last chance in stoppage time but was thwarted by Guzan, who swiftly closed in to block the shot.
