Mai Whelan, contestant number 287, emerged victorious in the season finale of “The Challenge” on Wednesday, securing a grand prize of $4.56 million. The 55-year-old from Virginia triumphed over runner-up Phill Cain, a Hawaiian scuba instructor, in a tense game of “rock paper scissors.”
Netflix also announced the renewal of “The Challenge” for a second season, following its debut in November. This reality show competition is based on Netflix’s popular 2021 South Korean series “Squid Game,” which is also set to return for a second season.
“The Challenge” involves 456 participants competing for the substantial $4.56 million prize. Contestants engage in various games inspired by the original series, with new challenges added. The show tests their strategy, alliances, and character, with eliminations occurring throughout the competition.
Unlike the original “Squid Game” series, where the high stakes include fatal consequences, “The Challenge” doesn’t involve life-and-death scenarios. However, its elaborate sets and games closely resemble those in “Squid Game.” The reality show introduces new challenges that lead to eliminations, rewards, or advantages in subsequent games.
“Squid Game,” the 2021 drama series, revolves around financially desperate contestants playing deadly versions of childhood games for a chance to win a large cash prize. The series achieved massive success, becoming Netflix’s biggest series launch ever and winning six Primetime Emmys in its first season.
Casting for the second season of “The Challenge” is now open at SquidGameCasting.com.
