Son to leave Spurs after decade, eyes MLS move

Tottenham Hotspur captain Heung-Min Son has officially announced his intention to leave the club at the end of the summer, bringing an end to a remarkable 10-year spell in north London. The 33-year-old forward, who ranks fourth on Spurs’ all-time goalscorers list, is set to make an emotional final appearance for the club in a friendly match against Newcastle United on Sunday — a fixture held in his homeland of South Korea.

A Farewell Decade in the Making

Son revealed his decision during a press conference ahead of Sunday’s pre-season fixture, which will likely serve as his farewell match in a Spurs shirt. Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank confirmed that Son will captain the side in the game, a fitting tribute for a player who has long been central to the club’s identity and global profile.

“This is the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make in my career,” Son told reporters, visibly moved. “There are so many special memories. But after 10 years, I believe it’s time for a change — a new environment to push myself again.”

The South Korean international joined Spurs in 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen at just 23 years old. Over the past decade, he has grown into one of the Premier League’s most consistent and admired attackers, earning widespread acclaim for both his technical ability and his humility on and off the pitch.

Now, at 33, Son feels ready for a fresh chapter. “I arrived in north London as a young man. I’m leaving as a grown man, and a very proud one,” he said.

MLS Move Likely as Spurs Prepare for Talks

Despite renewed interest from Saudi Arabian clubs, Son has expressed a clear preference for a move to Major League Soccer. Sources close to the negotiations suggest that LAFC, one of the league’s top sides and already linked to the player, are now expected to accelerate discussions with Tottenham over a potential transfer deal.

While no final agreement has been confirmed, both Son and Spurs appear aligned on a respectful and smooth exit. “The club is helping me with this decision,” he said. “I am grateful for their understanding.”

Should the move materialize, Son would follow in the footsteps of other global stars seeking a new challenge in MLS, while potentially helping grow the league’s international appeal — particularly across Asia, where he enjoys icon status.
